Admission to the Single Subject Credential Program and the University are separate. Candidates typically begin by applying for admission to the university for conditional acceptance to pursue the Single Subject Credential Program. Once admitted to the university, candidates may then enroll in the pre-requisite and co-requisite courses during the first semester. While in the pre-requisite course (EDSS 300) candidates will compile their program application and submit it at the end of the first semester to be considered for program admission for the second semester to complete the core courses. Candidates must be admitted to the program to take the core courses. Below is more information regarding the university and program admission requirements and application process.
Students should apply to CSULB for the semester they wish to begin taking the prerequisite and co-requisite courses.
The University application deadline is firm. Applications to the university will NOT be accepted after the deadline. Candidates that miss the university deadline may attend through Open University until the next application period.
- The CSULB deadline for Fall 2018 admission to the University isJune 1, 2018. This application will be available beginning Jan. 1, 2018.

Program Admission Procedures
Application to the Single Subject Credential Program is embedded in the prerequisite course (EDSS 300). Candidates compile and submit their program application packets to their EDSS 300 instructor at the end of the semester. The EDSS 300 instructor will review the applications with the Subject Area Coordinator and submit them to the Single Subject Office for processing at the end of the term.
The program application is part of the EDSS 300 course packet that you will purchase from the bookstore the semester you take EDSS 300.
After acceptance to the program, candidates may take any remaining co-requisites and core courses. Candidates will complete one semester of student teaching after all course work is completed.
Program Admission Requirements
- Complete the pre-requisite course EDSS 300, in the appropriate subject area, with a minimum grade of "B".
- Satisfactorily complete the 45-hour fieldwork requirement in EDSS 300.
- Attain a grade point average of at least 2.67 in all baccalaureate and post baccalaureate coursework or a grade point average of at least 2.75 in the last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units attempted.
- Complete an interview with approved program faculty (assigned in the EDSS 300 course).
- Submit two recommendation forms (PDF) that speak to the candidate’s potential for successful public school teaching (these are specific forms in the EDSS 300 course packet and they can be found under Documents and Forms. Recommendation letters will not be accepted in place of the recommendation forms).
- Submit a written statement of professional goals and philosophy of education (assigned in the EDSS 300 course).
- Submit proof of a valid Certificate of Clearance, 30-Day Sub Permit, Activity Supervisor Permit or Child Development Permit issued from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)
- Submit a negative tuberculosis (TB) skin test taken within the last 4 years or chest x-ray taken within the last eight years. Tuberculosis clearance must be valid through student teaching.
- Proof of meeting the Basic Skills Requirement
- Demonstrate ability to communicate orally in English at the level required of public school teachers by demonstration of English production skills in the course EDSS 300 and through an oral interview with subject matter program faculty. In the case of candidates for a credential in teaching Languages Other Than English, there is a bilingual interview requirement in English and the target language.
- Demonstrate personality and character traits that satisfy the standards of the teaching profession and suitable aptitude for teaching in public schools through the application documentation, the personal interview, and performance in EDSS 300. Candidates must continue to demonstrate appropriate character and personality traits through completion of the program.
- Attend a mandatory SSCP Orientation presented by the University Coordinator
- Submit a completed program application to the EDSS 300 instructor.
- Complete all requirements for admission to the program unique to the candidate’s subject matter program.
